First of all, you need to talk to the manager of the facility to see what type of people you’ll be dealing with if you actually do rent a unit. If you don’t get good service on the phone call, you may not like the service you’ll get later on. Then, find out how new (or how old!) the storage units actually are. Older units often are dirty, rusty, and/or have water leaks. Another prime consideration is whether the unit you’re getting actually measures the full size that you’re paying for. It’s not unusual for certain companies to advertise a standard size, but when you measure it off by hand you find that it’s as much as two feet shorter or narrower than the nominal measurement. If that’s the case, then obviously you’re getting less for your money – AND…now you know that the company doesn’t mind taking advantage of you. If they aren’t totally honest about the size you’re paying for, you should wonder about other details that they could be concealing, too.

Another major consideration is the level of security. Some facilities are totally fenced in, with an electronic gate. Some have surveillance cameras at a number of locations. Obviously, the more security measures that you find, the better. The type of neighborhood is another thing you should observe and think about. If there are unsavory people living or working nearby, take note.

If you find a facility that’s all paved, consider yourself lucky! Usually, you’ll have to deal with dirt, gravel, or mud around or near the units. Also observe the slope of the ground near the unit you’re considering, and the potential for flooding. This is a very real consideration, and should not be taken lightly! Water in your storage unit will not only ruin your whole day, but it will ruin your possessions, too.

Compare prices. But take all of the above into consideration, too. No amount is “cheap” if you’re not getting a good and secure unit in the first place.

Great self storage can be hard to find in Smyrna, TN, or in the Nashville metro area, for that matter. (By the way, self storage facilities are called ‘bodegas’ in Spanish). Anyway, finding a place to hide your loot can be rather frustrating if you have the bad luck of contacting the wrong places first. There are some places that simply are not worth your time and energy, and in fact they can be a very real threat to the safety and security of your personal possessions. This was the case when I rented a mini storage unit in Smyrna a while back. Only hours after I finished loading my stuff into my unit, a passing storm caused a lot of water damage to the items that I’d just moved in. Though it was obvious to me that there was an old, unrepaired leak in the roof of my unit, the owner was very belligerent and refused to take any responsibility for the damages. It took me months of work, and a few threats, to finally get somewhat of a settlement to offset the damages. I moved out of that place as soon as I possibly could.

Which brings me to the next self storage unit that I rented. What a difference! These units were nearly new, and well maintained. The place was family-owned and operated, and the folks were easy to work with. And, the whole place is paved, so there’s no mud and gravel to deal with. It’s also fenced in and there’s an electronic gate that keeps the bad guys out. The best part is that the price was also less than I’d payed before, even though the facility was noticeably higher quality. For one thing, the storage units are actual the same size that’s listed on the rental agreement. Amazingly enough, the other places I’d rented turned out to have a lot less square feet than they’d advertised – that is, the units had been a few feet smaller than the listed size. Not so with my new facility! I get the size that I pay for, and nothing less.

Ok, so you want to know the name of the place that I found…the place that I’m recommending to you now. It’s called Florence Road Self Storage, and the website is:
